Storytelling: How and Why

Summary: Got a story inside of you? Get a taste of the art of storytelling at this introductory session with professional storyteller Jennie Frost.

Speaker Bio: Since 1996, Jennie has performed in festivals, concerts, conferences, libraries, and schools in 43 Alberta communities and in 7 other provinces and 1 territory. Jennie is also an author. In 2005, her first book The Courtship of Hippodameia, the story of a Greek princess, was published (Mellen, Lewiston, New York). In 2005, she also published a 2-CD set Pygmalion and Other Greek Myths (Edmonton), thanks to a Canada Council grant. She has had prizewinning stories and poems published in literary journals and anthologies, most recently being one of the winners of the 2008 Short Grain Contest for her story “Power.” Jennie is a Past President of Storytellers of Canada—Conteurs du Canada, and was for 12 years President, then Concert Producer, then Treasurer of TALES Edmonton. She is a member of the Writers Guild of Alberta, The Edmonton Stroll of Poets, and the Canadian Authors Association. A member of the Children’s Literature Roundtable for twenty years, she has extensive knowledge of children’s literature. She has an M.A. in Ancient History and a B.Ed. (Secondary, Latin).

Beyond the Book – Speaker Series
Beyond the book is a book-themed speaker series. Registrants who have read the novel listed will then attend a presentation with a speaker who will discuss a central topic from the novel. A brief question and conversation period will follow the presentation.

A 5-year-old narrates a story about his life growing up in a single room where his mother aims to protect him from the man who has held her prisoner for seven years. Rylee Hatchard from Rowan House Emergency Shelter to discuss the topic of abuse.

Partnership Community Education Program

The Partnership Community Education Program is a program designed to reduce stigma and increase education to the general public about schizophrenia. Individuals with schizophrenia present alongside someone who has a loved one with schizophrenia. Presenters provide a unique insight into living with schizophrenia and living with an individual who has schizophrenia. This program aids the community in developing acceptance, understanding and empathy for those with a mental illness.

This just might be the perfect time to get started! Award winning author David A. Poulsen will teach you the techniques that can turn those terrific ideas into terrific pages. You will write and find out it can be both fun and rewarding. Participants will “workshop” their writing project with other writers like themselves, offering and receiving helpful suggestions as to how to make that story even better. Participants will have fun sharing ideas, dreams, hopes, stories and finding out what to do with that story once it is written.
